What is a short circuit?

A short circuit is a situation in which two or more different lines (having different voltage levels/ different phase/ different terminals) come in contact and finally leads to the flow of large short circuit currents that may damage the equipment or the system.

In a three-phase system, a occurs when two or more phases come in contact or when the phase line comes in contact with the neutral or the ground. When a occurs, the impedance between the lines falls to zero and large current flows in one or more phases.
In a DC circuit, a is said to occur when the positive terminal comes in contact with the negative terminal or the ground. A short may damage the whole equipment or one or more active or passive devices in the circuit.
